On April 29, 2011, Lindner & Marsack, M3 Insurance Solutions for Business and Blankenheim Services will present parts I and II of a three-part series on assessing and minimizing the risks associated with ill, injured and disabled employees.
Part I:
This presentation will address the hiring process and the specific steps employers can take to minimize the risk of hiring someone who is physically incapable of doing a particular job.
Topics addressed will include:
- Writing effective job descriptions
- Pre-employment examinations
- Use of physical examinations for transfers and promotions
- Ergonomics and job rotation
- Work hardening/boot camp programs
- Obtaining relevant medical/injury information from applicants
- Training employees in body mechanics and safe work practices
Part II:
This presentation will focus on employees with short-term conditions. Employers of every size must develop effective strategies for managing employees suffering from short-term illness and injuries. These conditions can increase the cost of workers’ compensation coverage and claims. They also can increase the cost of health insurance. These conditions tend to decrease overall productivity and increase labor costs by requiring overtime or temporary workers. The employees who cover for these workers can become resentful, hurting morale and team work.
Attendees will learn strategies, policies and practices for minimizing the impact of these conditions while complying with state and federal legal obligations. In particular, the presentation will cover:
Workers’ Compensation
- Procedures for first reports of injury, first aid and emergency care
- Managing treatment and detecting/investigating fraud
- The claims process
-
Return-to-work and light duty
FMLA
- The nexus between FMLA leave and workers’ compensation injuries
- Developing policies that manage the competing business and legal concerns arising out of work-related and non-work-related conditions
Accommodations
- Explore how the treatment of workers’ compensation injuries can affect the obligation to accommodate non-work-related injuries
Effective drug-testing policies
