How Do You Take a Wellness Program from OK to Awesome?

Employees engaged in wellness programs lead healthier lifestyles – that’s simple (and proven). But getting employees engaged – well, that’s a bit trickier. Elkhorn Area School District had a solid wellness program in place, with decent participation rates. But the program had reached a plateau. The District knew it could do better – but how?
Not only did program participation soar – staff members have responded with amazing achievements.
M3 Insurance and Humana partnered with the District to give needed boosts that helped the program break through that plateau. Humana’s Vitality Program offered substantial financial incentives for participation, while M3 worked with the District’s advisory committee, providing benchmarking information and guidance.
By moving its program to a highly incentivized structure, the District increased participation to a whopping 93%, unprecedented in the public sector. But staff did way more than just participate. A majority of them achieved silver status or higher within Humana’s Vitality Program, ranking the District’s program #2 in the nation among school districts, #2 in the Wisconsin market overall, and #7 in the nation across Humana’s entire book of business (1,079 groups).
Congratulations to the District for taking the initiative and refusing to settle for mediocrity. In the end, though, the real credit goes to the staff. Their dedication – and impressive achievements – have moved the District’s wellness program ahead in dramatic fashion and transformed the District into a better place to work.
