Work Zones = No Phones on Wisconsin Roadways

Using handheld devices in work zones now illegal in Wisconsin.
Effective October 1, 2016 it is illegal to talk on a handheld mobile device while driving through road work zones in Wisconsin. The law, 2015 Wisconsin Act 308, is part of the state’s ongoing efforts to increase safety and reduce distracted driving.
Here are some important points to remember:
- Hands-free/Bluetooth Devices: These devices are exempt and legal to use in work zones.
- Emergency Exception: There is an exception for drivers using hand-held mobile devices while dialing 911 for emergencies.
- Texting: There is NO exception for texting while driving. Current Wisconsin law forbids composing or sending text or mail messages while driving any motor vehicle.
Wisconsin has an average of almost 2,000 work zone crashes every year. The new law aims to increase safety by ensuring drivers give as much attention as possible to the road.
