RISK INSIGHT: OSHA Form 300A Filing Deadline Extended to 12/31

OSHA has extended the date for electronic submission of records to December 31st.  Please note that the Injury Tracking Application will not be able to accept 2016 records after  December 31, 2017, so there will be no more extensions.

OSHA Form 300A electronic filing is now required for:

  • Companies with 20 to 249 employees at each establishment in certain classifications that have historically high injuries and illnesses, as identified through the following link:
  • Companies that have 250 employees or more that currently maintain OSHA logs must report regardless of classification.

Note – The following OSHA-approved State Plans have not yet adopted the requirement to submit injury and illness reports electronically: CA, MD, MN, SC, UT, WA and WY. Establishments in these states are not currently required to submit their summary data through the ITA. Similarly, state and local government establishments in IL, ME, NJ, and NY are not currently required to submit their data through the ITA. In 2018, requirements for electronic filing of 2017 OSHA Forms will be as follows:

  • Companies with 20 to 249 employees will have to file their 2017 OSHA Form 300A by July 1, 2018.
  • Companies with 250 or more employees will have to file their 2017 OSHA Forms 300A, 300, and 301 by July 1, 2018.

In the following years, these respective reporting requirements will be required by March 2, 2019, 2020, etc.

How to File:

The reporting can occur by manual entry (probably preferred by most smaller companies), through uploading of a CSV file, or by transmitting automatic recordkeeping systems via an API (Application Programming Interface). Based on information on OSHA’s website, the entire process should take about 20 minutes. You will need your 2016 OSHA Form 300A as part of this entry process for this year.
