Seasonal Shift: Prep Your Property for Year-End

Personal Lines, Property & Casualty

Believe it or not, the temperature will soon feel a little cooler. As you prepare to change your wardrobe from swimsuits and sandals to turtleneck sweaters and boots for the fall season, don’t forget your home, car and recreational vehicles.

Preparing for the seasonal transition not only protects your valuable assets but also provides peace of mind. Our comprehensive checklist will help you safeguard your property, vehicles, and leisure equipment, ensuring they remain in top condition throughout the fall and into the winter months.  Here are some things to consider:

Home

  • Inspect and Clean Gutters: Remove leaves and debris from gutters and downspouts to prevent blockages and ice dams.
  • Roof Inspection: Check for missing or damaged shingles and repair any leaks to prevent water damage from snow and ice.
  • Seal Gaps and Cracks: Inspect the exterior of your home for gaps and cracks, especially around windows and doors, and seal them to prevent drafts and heat loss.
  • Drain and Store Hoses: Disconnect garden hoses, drain any remaining water, and store them indoors. Shut off and drain outdoor faucets to prevent pipes from freezing.
  • Furnace and HVAC Maintenance: Have your furnace inspected and serviced by a professional. Replace the air filter and consider having your ducts cleaned.
  • Weather-stripping: Install or replace weather-stripping around windows and doors to prevent drafts and improve energy efficiency.

Auto

  • Oil Change: Ensure the vehicle has fresh oil and a new oil filter to keep the engine running smoothly in colder temperatures.
  • Battery Check: Test the battery and charging system. Clean the battery terminals and ensure the battery is in good condition. Replace it if necessary.
  • Fluids Check: Check all fluid levels, including coolant, brake fluid, transmission fluid, and windshield washer fluid. Use winter-grade fluids where applicable.
  • Tire Maintenance: Inspect tires for wear and ensure they have adequate tread depth. Consider switching to winter tires for better traction on snow and ice. Check tire pressure regularly as it can drop in colder temperatures.
  • Brake Inspection: Have the brakes inspected to ensure they are in good condition and capable of handling icy and wet conditions.

Toys”(Boats/ATV’s/Campers):

  • Clean and Inspect: Thoroughly clean all vehicles (boats, ATVs, campers) inside and out. Check for any damage or wear and address necessary repairs before storage.
  • Battery Care: Remove the batteries from all vehicles. Store them in a cool, dry place and keep them charged throughout the winter.
  • Fuel System: For vehicles with fuel systems (boats, ATVs), add a fuel stabilizer to the fuel tank to prevent condensation and fuel degradation.
  • Cover and Store: Use high-quality covers to protect all vehicles from the elements. If possible, store them in dry, sheltered areas.
  • Regular Checks: Periodically check on the stored vehicles to ensure they remain in good condition throughout the winter.
  • Check Manuals: Always refer to the owner’s manuals for specific winterization procedures and recommendations.
